BIMI is still an Internet-Draft. The assertion record is a TXT record under _bimi. It is not an RFC.

The document is draft-brand-indicators-for-message-identification-14, dated 1 May 2026, expires 2 November 2026. Internet-Drafts are working documents of the IETF. This one is not an RFC.

MUAs and mail-receiving organizations are free to define their own policies for making use of BIMI data and for indicator display.

The assertion record

The owner of example.com publishes at default._bimi.example.com. A selector other than default is a name under _bimi, the same way DKIM selectors sit under _domainkey. The draft's example for selector brand is brand._bimi.example.com IN TXT "v=BIMI1; l=https://image.example.com/bimi/logo/".

v is required and must be BIMI1, and it must be the first tag. l is the indicator URI. a is an optional evidence URI. Empty l and empty a together are a declination to publish: v=BIMI1; l=; a=;. Unknown tags must be ignored. Receivers must not repair syntax or capitalisation.
